Carboxiterapia

What is carboxytherapy?

Carboxytherapy is a non-surgical aesthetic treatment that consists of the subcutaneous or intradermal injection of pharmaceutical-grade carbon dioxide (CO₂) in controlled doses. The gas, once injected beneath the skin, triggers a cascade of physiological responses that improve local circulation, stimulate cellular renewal, and produce a lipolytic and firming effect on the treated tissues.

This is a medically-originated treatment, initially developed at thermal spa centers in France, which today holds solid clinical evidence for multiple facial and body indications. Unlike many aesthetic procedures, carboxytherapy acts on real physiological mechanisms: it is not a purely superficial procedure but works in depth at the vascular and tissue level.

Certified medical CO₂

The CO₂ used in carboxytherapy is pharmaceutical-grade medical gas, administered with specialized equipment that controls injection pressure and flow. It is not the same CO₂ found in the air or in carbonated water: its purity and traceability are guaranteed for clinical use.

The central mechanism is based on the Bohr Effect: when CO₂ is injected into tissues, the body interprets it as a signal of local hypoxia and responds by increasing blood flow to the area through vasodilation. This generates an extra supply of oxygen and nutrients to the treated tissue, activating cellular repair and collagen production.

Indications: facial and body

Facial indications

Vascular dark circles
Improves periocular microcirculation. Reduces the violet discoloration and puffiness of dark circles of circulatory origin.
Facial laxity
Stimulates collagen and elastin production. Improves firmness and contour of cheekbones, jawline and neck.
Texture and luminosity
Deep cellular oxygenation that improves overall skin texture, reduces pallor and delivers natural radiance to the skin.
Scars and facial stretch marks
Vascular regeneration accelerates scar maturation and improves the appearance of superficial marks on the skin.

Body indications

🍊
Cellulite
Improves microcirculation and reduces the orange-peel appearance on thighs, buttocks and abdomen.
Localized fat
CO₂ has a direct lipolytic effect on adipocytes. Indicated for flanks, lower abdomen and inner thighs.
💪
Body laxity
Firms the skin of the abdomen, arms and thighs. Highly recommended post-weight-loss and post-pregnancy.
Stretch marks
Stimulates connective tissue regeneration in the stretch mark area, improving their color and texture over time.

How it works: the Bohr Effect and lipolysis

When CO₂ is injected into the subcutaneous tissue, it acts on two fundamental physiological mechanisms:

The procedure: what a session is like

A carboxytherapy session lasts between 20 and 40 minutes depending on the area to be treated. It requires no anesthesia, no special prior preparation, and no recovery time afterward.

  1. 1
Evaluation and zone delineation The treatment area is assessed, injection points are mapped, and the skin is cleansed with an antiseptic solution to prepare the surface.
  2. 2
CO₂ injection Using very fine needles, the gas is injected at low pressure into the subcutaneous or intradermal plane according to the indication. The sensation is a slight pressure or momentary warmth that disappears within seconds.
  3. 3
Immediate post-session A slight redness or sensation of warmth may appear, which resolves within 30–60 minutes. There are no significant restrictions on daily activities after the session.

Results: when and how much do they show?

The results of carboxytherapy are progressive and consolidate throughout the treatment cycle. The standard protocol is 8 to 12 sessions performed twice a week.

Results vary by indication

Vascular dark circles and facial laxity tend to show the fastest and most evident results. Deep cellulite and localized fat require the full cycle and show more gradual improvement. Consistency with the protocol is the key to treatment success.

Frequently Asked Questions about Carboxytherapy

Carboxytherapy is mildly uncomfortable but not painful. You feel a momentary sensation of pressure or warmth in the treated area as the CO₂ disperses under the skin. This sensation disappears within seconds. No anesthesia is required. Tolerance is high and most patients continue without difficulty from the very first session.

The standard protocol is 8 to 12 sessions, performed twice a week. First results begin to appear from the fourth or fifth session. For maintenance, one monthly session is recommended once the initial cycle is complete. The exact frequency is adjusted according to the indication and the individual response of each patient.

Carboxytherapy shows especially good results for vascular dark circles, superficial and moderate cellulite, localized fat on flanks and thighs, and firming sagging skin. In the facial area it also improves overall skin luminosity and texture. It is less effective for deep fibrous cellulite and very pronounced static wrinkles.

Yes. Carboxytherapy combines very well with radiofrequency, body mesotherapy and lymphatic drainage to enhance results for body indications. In the facial area it can be combined with hyaluronic acid, PRP and chemical peels. Dr. Jenny evaluates each case individually to design the most appropriate and safe protocol.
