What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a molecule naturally present in the skin, connective tissue, and joints. Its function is to retain water and maintain tissue volume and hydration. From our late twenties onwards, the body's natural production begins to decline — contributing to facial volume loss, the appearance of lines, and loss of definition in the contours of the face.

Injectable hyaluronic acid fillers are synthetic versions of this same molecule, manufactured in pharmaceutical-grade laboratory conditions and cross-linked to extend their duration in the tissue. When injected into specific areas of the face, they restore volume, redefine contours, and hydrate the skin from within — producing natural, immediate results.

Key advantage: reversibility

Hyaluronic acid is the only injectable filler that can be fully dissolved with hyaluronidase — an enzyme that breaks it down within 24–48 hours. This makes it the safest option among all dermal fillers and allows corrections if the result is not what was expected.

Treatment areas

Hyaluronic acid can be used in virtually every area of the face where volume loss or lack of definition is present. At Dr. Jenny's practice, the most commonly requested areas are:

Lips

Lip augmentation and definition is one of the most popular treatments. HA can add volume to thin lips, improve the definition of the lip border (cupid's bow and philtrum columns), correct asymmetries, and hydrate chronically dry lips. The key is using the right amount — typically 0.5 to 1 ml — to achieve a natural, kissable result rather than an obvious "filled" appearance.

Cheeks and midface

Cheekbone projection and midface volume are central to a youthful facial appearance. As we age, the malar fat pad descends and thins, creating a flat, tired look. HA placed at the cheekbone level restores the natural triangle of youth — lifting the midface and indirectly improving the nasolabial folds without touching them directly.

Chin and jawline

Chin projection and jawline definition can transform facial proportions dramatically. A well-projected chin balances a prominent nose, harmonizes the profile, and creates a more defined, sculpted appearance. Jawline contouring with HA builds a crisp lower facial border and reduces the appearance of jowls.

Tear troughs and under-eye area

The tear trough is the groove between the lower eyelid and the cheek. When this area loses volume, it creates a shadow that looks like dark circles — even in well-rested patients. HA carefully placed in this area with a cannula technique significantly softens the transition and reduces the appearance of dark circles.

Nasolabial folds and marionette lines

These are among the first signs of facial aging. While they cannot be completely eliminated without addressing the underlying tissue movement, HA placed in the nasolabial fold and marionette line area can significantly reduce their depth and improve the overall facial expression.

Temples

Temple hollowing is often overlooked but dramatically ages the upper third of the face. HA restoration of the temporal area recreates the smooth, full contour of youth and frames the eyes and brow.

Types of fillers and brands

Not all hyaluronic acid fillers are the same. Different formulations have different properties — viscosity, elasticity, water-binding capacity — making them suitable for different areas and indications.

Dr. Jenny uses only ANMAT and FDA-certified premium brands: Juvederm (Allergan), Restylane (Galderma), and Teosyal (Teoxane). These are the same products used in the United States, Europe, and Australia — manufactured under the strictest quality controls and with the largest body of clinical evidence.

Medical tourism advantage

Buenos Aires offers the same premium filler products at 40–50% of what they cost in the United States or Western Europe. This makes combining a trip to Buenos Aires with aesthetic treatments a genuinely cost-effective option — without compromising on product quality or medical expertise.

The procedure

Hyaluronic acid treatments are outpatient procedures with no required downtime. A typical session follows these steps:

  1. 1
Consultation and facial mapping Detailed assessment of facial proportions, discussion of goals, and design of the treatment plan. Reference photographs are taken. We determine which areas to treat, which products to use, and the volumes involved.
  2. 2
Topical anesthesia Anesthetic cream is applied to the areas to be treated 20–30 minutes before the procedure. Most premium fillers also contain lidocaine in their formulation, making the injection itself very comfortable.
  3. 3
Injection technique Depending on the area and depth, Dr. Jenny uses either fine needles or blunt-tip cannulas. The cannula technique reduces bruising risk significantly and is preferred for tear troughs, cheeks, and temples. The procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes for a multi-area treatment.
  4. 4
Immediate result assessment Results are visible immediately. Once complete, we review the result together, and minor adjustments can be made on the spot. Ice is applied to reduce any immediate swelling.
  5. 5
Aftercare instructions and follow-up You leave with written aftercare instructions. A follow-up appointment at 2 weeks allows for final assessment and any fine-tuning if needed.

Aftercare

Recovery from hyaluronic acid fillers is minimal. Most patients return to normal activities the same day. General aftercare guidelines include:

Lips may appear more swollen than the final result for the first 48–72 hours — this is normal and the result settles within a week. For cheeks, temples, and jawline, swelling is minimal and the final shape is visible within days.

Frequently Asked Questions

The duration of the effect varies for each patient and is assessed at the consultation, depending on the area treated, the product used, and individual metabolism. Lip fillers tend to metabolize faster due to muscle movement, while cheek, chin, and temple fillers tend to last longer. A maintenance touch-up session keeps results looking their best.

Discomfort is minimal. Topical anesthetic cream is applied 20–30 minutes before the procedure, and most premium fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, Teosyal) already contain lidocaine in their formulation. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild pinch or pressure during injection — significantly more comfortable than a dental injection.

Natural results are the guiding principle at Dr. Jenny's practice. The goal is enhancement that complements your features — not an obvious transformation. Conservative volumes, anatomically-based injection placement, and the choice of the right product for each area are the keys to results that look refreshed and harmonious rather than "done." The ideal outcome is that people notice you look great without being able to identify why.

Yes — this is one of the most important advantages of HA fillers. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid within 24–48 hours of injection, returning the area to its pre-treatment state. This reversibility is unique to HA and is why it is considered the gold standard in injectable aesthetics. No other filler type (calcium hydroxyapatite, PMMA, poly-L-lactic acid) can be reversed.

The fee is defined during the in-person valuation consultation with Dr. Jenny, based on each patient's needs. As a personalized medical service, we do not publish prices — everything is arranged during the initial consultation. Buenos Aires uses the same certified products (Juvederm, Restylane, Teosyal), the same safety protocols, and treatment performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon.
